Pt-Pu

Pt-Pu (Platinum-Plutonium) D.E. Peterson The assessed Pt-Pu phase diagram is based primarily on the work of [65Kut], [ 67Kut], and [78Lan]. [65Kut], [67Kut], and [78Lan] agree that the maximum solubility of Pu in (Pt) is less than 1 at.% Pu. [65Kut] and [67Kut] found the solubility of Pt is about 1 at.% Pt in (ePu), less than 1 at.% Pt in (dPu), and negligible for the remaining Pu allotropes. [78Lan] reported peritectic formation of Pt4Pu, which had been missed by earlier workers, and also noted that the peritectic reactions of the intermetallics at compositions less than 50 at.% Pu are nearly congruent. [ 77Cro] and [78Cro] reported formation of Pt20Pu31 and PtPu2 phases, respectively, with a small amount of liquid formation observed by annealing PtPu2 at 850 C. These intermetallics have been assumed for this evaluation to undergo peritectic reactions at 1180 and 850 C, respectively. Because the sample compositions and melting onsets over the region from 0 to 50 at.% Pu were carefully measured by [78Lan], the phase behavior they observed was combined with results of [65Kut], [67Kut], [77Cro], and [78Cro] over the 50 to 100 at.% Pu range to establish the phase diagram. [71Hil] performed electrical resistivity measurements on PtPu and found indications of magnetic ordering in the range 40 to 70 K. [73Har] performed analogous resistivity measurements of Pu-noble metal intermetallics. These workers found that Pt2Pu and Pt3Pu undergo ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic ordering at 6 and 40 K, respectively. 65Kut: V.I. Kutaitsev, N.T. Chebotarev, I.G. Lebedev, M.A. Andrianov, V.N.
