Pb-Pu

Pb-Pu (Lead-Plutonium) E.M. Foltyn and D.E. Peterson The Pu-Pb system is characterized by the presence of six intermetallic compounds-Pu3Pb, Pu5Pb3, Pu5Pb4, Pu4Pb5 (tentative), PuPb2, and PuPb3. The system also exhibits one eutectic and three peritectic reactions. The assessed phase diagram is based primarily on the work of [69Woo], [69Nic], and [68Nic]. Mutual solubility of the elements is negligible. Pu4Pb5 has occurred in shrinkage cavities of ~60 to 64 at.% Pb melts. Metallography results suggest a slight solubility of Pb in this compound at high temperatures. PuPb3 is moderately stable in air, with a melting point of 1138 C and a slight solubility toward the Pu-rich side [69Woo]. 68Nic: R.F. Nickerson, AEC Report UCRL-50509 (1968). 69Nic: R.F. Nickerson, J. Nucl. Mater., 32, 208-217 (1969). 69Woo: D.H. Wood, E.M. Cramer, P.L. Wallace, and W.J. Ramsey, J. Nucl. Mater., 32, 193-207 (1969). Published in Bull.
