Ni-Si

Ni-Si (Nickel-Silicon) P. Nash and A. Nash The assessed phase diagram for the Ni-Si system is based mainly on the work of [36Iwa], [40For], [62Aal], [63Yam], and [83Oya] for the liquidus and solidus and on the data of [36Iwa], [62Aal], [63Yam], [64Gra], [74Bad], and [83Oya] for the solid state equilibria. The liquidus and solidus in the region 30 to 40 at.% Si are tentative. The liquidus from 40 to 100 at.% Si is based on the data of [36Iwa]. The polymorphic transformation in Ni3Si2 at 820 C on the Ni- rich side and at 800 C on the Si-rich side [74Bad] has been incorporated in the assessed diagram, although the phase boundaries other than the invariants have not been established. The (Ni) solvus in the range from the eutectic to the b2 = b3 transition is given by [38Oka] as increasing in solute content with decreasing temperature from 16.4 to 17.6 at.% Si. [83Oya] shows a slight decrease in solubility with decreasing temperature. No systematic investigation of the incoherent (Ni) solvus has been undertaken over a wide range of temperatures, and it cannot be considered well established. Rapid solidification of Ni-rich alloys extends the solid solubility of Si in ( Ni) to about 18 at.%, although some faint diffraction lines of a second unidentified phase were noted. An increase in short-range order was reported on annealing deformed Ni-7 at.% Si alloys; however, on longer annealing times, the short-range order diminished. It is therefore a metastable transition state. 36Iwa: K. Iwase and M. Okamoto, Sci. Rep. Tohoku Imp. Univ., K. Honda Anniv., 777-792 (1936). 38Oka: M.
