Mg-Mn (Magnesium-Manganese) A.A. Nayeb-Hashemi and J.B. Clark The complete Mg-Mn phase diagram has not been determined, except for the Mg- rich region (0 to 3.7 at.% Mn). The assessed diagram is based on thermal analysis, microscopic observation, and hardness measurements of [57Pet] and on resistometric measurements of [64Dri]. This diagram is different from the diagrams given in [Hansen] and [Metals]. There are wide discrepancies in the experimental data reported in the literature. In the assessed Mg-Mn phase diagram, the solubility limit is based on the data of [64Dri] (0.99 at.% Mn) and is in very close agreement with that of [57Pet] ( 1.03 at.% Mn). There is no general agreement as to the identity of the phase in equilibrium with the (Mg) solid solution. X-ray analysis of [64Dri] showed that the phase in equilibrium with (Mg) is (bMn), but other X-ray analyses indicated that the phase in equilibrium with (Mg) is (aMn). In X-ray analyses of particles extracted electrolytically from Mg-0.67 at.% Mn, [59Dri] found mixtures of aMn and bMn. The extent of solubility of Mg in (Mn) has not been established. [59Dri], by X- ray analysis of (Mn) particles extracted from a Mg-0.67 at.% Mn alloy, showed that the solid solubility of Mg in (Mn) is negligible, because the particles were almost pure Mn. 57Pet: D.A.
