Hg-S

Hg-S (Mercury-Sulfur) R.C. Sharma and Y.A. Chang The assessed Hg-S phase diagram is based partially on thermodynamic modeling and calculations, with review of the data of [65Kul], [71Paj], and [78Pot]. The intermediate phase HgS is formed around 50 at.% S. It exists in three allotropic forms (aHgS, bHgS, and gHgS), and it melts congruently at 820 C. [78Pot] found that all three allotropic forms of HgS dissolve excess S under equilibrium conditions. The stability range of aHgS, bHgS, and gHgS and the related equilibria shown in the assessed diagram are based essentially on the work of [78Pot]. 65Kul: G. Kullerud, Carnegie Inst. Wash. Year Book, 64, 193-195 (1965). 71Paj: A. Pajaczkowska and E.Z. Dziuba, J. Cryst. Growth, 11, 21-24 (1971). 78Pot: R.W. Potter II and H.L. Barnes, Am. Mineral., 63, 1143-1152 (1978). Submitted to the APD Program. Complete evaluation contains 6 figures, 7 tables, and 17 references. Special Points of the Hg-S System
