Gd-Ti

Gd-Ti (Gadolinium-Titanium) J.L. Murray There is general agreement that all Ti-RE phase diagrams are characterized by the absence of intermetallic compounds, limited mutual solubilities in the solid state, and most often, miscibility gaps in the liquid state. The Ti-Gd diagram conforms to this pattern. However, there is a paucity of experimental data on this system, and where data exist, they conflict. The two major experimental studies of the system were performed by [61Cro] and [62Sav]. The assessed phase diagram is based primarily on the data of [61Cro], because of the attention given to avoiding contamination during melting, the use of several experimental techniques to confirm results, and the detailed documentation of the experiments. The purity of Gd, however, was not good in either study, and further work is needed. A calculation of the phase diagram from Gibbs energies was performed as part of the present evaluation. The experimental data of [61Cro] could be reproduced within estimated experimental uncertainties by the calculations, and the diagram is drawn from these calculations. The calculations confirmed the evaluator's judgment that the [61Cro] melting point data should be reinterpreted as evidence for a miscibility gap in the liquid phase and monotectic reaction. 61Cro: J.G.
