Gd-Sn

Gd-Sn (Gadolinium-Tin) A. Palenzona and S. Cirafici The assessed Gd-Sn phase diagram is based primarily on the work of [84Liu] with some changes. The melting points of Gd and Sn and their transformation temperatures were modified to agree with the currently accepted values. The equilibrium phases include (1) the liquid, L; (2) ten intermediate phases- Gd3Sn, Gd5Sn3, Gd5Sn4, Gd8Sn7, Gd11Sn10, Gd3Sn4, GdSn2, Gd3Sn7, GdSn2.75, and GdSn3; and (3) four terminal solid solutions-(aSn), (bSn), (aGd), and (bGd), with negligible solubilities. No information is available regarding the solid solubility of Gd in (Sn) or Sn in (Gd). Concerning the Sn-rich side of the diagram, the experimental results of [85Kul] are not supported by satisfactory data regarding the purity of starting metals and experimental procedures. It was not specified by [85Kul] if the melting point of GdSn3 is congruent or incongruent, as also observed by [73Pal]; moreover, the value is 200 C higher than that found by [73Per] and [ 84Liu]. For this reason, the results of [84Liu] seem to be more reliable, and the value of the assessed melting point of GdSn3 is 910 C. The special points for Gd3Sn7 and GdSn2.75 are tentatively identified; the eutectic (?) reaction found by [84Liu] on the Sn-rich side is tentatively fixed at 231.9 C and >99 at.% Sn. 65Har: I.R.
