Gd-La (Gadolinium-Lanthanum) K.A. Gschneidner, Jr. and F.W. Calderwood The assessed phase diagram for the Gd-La system is based primarily on the work of [62Spe], with some modifications based on the data of [66Lun]. The main difference between these studies concerns the formation of the d (Sm-type) phase from the single-phase (aGd)-(aLa) solid solution, instead of the peritectoidal reaction of (aGd) + (aLa) reacting to form d, as reported by [ 62Spe]. The resulting continuous change from cph to dcph is similar to that found in the Nd-Sc system. Because both structures belong to the same space group (P63/mmc), the present evaluators know of no requirement that there be a first- or higher order phase transition between them. The continuous change from cph to dcph might be accounted for through a stacking-fault mechanism. In the assessed diagram, some of the melting point and transformation temperatures of the pure metals have been adjusted to conform with the currently accepted values. 62Spe: F.H. Spedding, R.M.
