Gd-Hg

Gd-Hg (Gadolinium-Mercury) C. Guminski The assessed Gd-Hg phase diagram at constrained vapor pressure was taken from [ Moffatt], who presumed it was similar to the Hg-La and Hg-Pr partial phase diagrams. Gd11Hg45 (first reported as GdHg4) and GdHg3 decompose at about 900 and 1000 C at constrained vapor pressure. They undergo peritectic reactions at 145 and 300 C, respectively, at 1 atm. Ranges of thermal stability of the Gd-Hg compounds at normal pressure are adopted from [66Kir] and are shown as solid lines. The Gd-Hg phase diagram consists of (1) the liquid, L; (2) the solid solutions of Hg in (aGd) and (bGd), with a solubility in (aGd) of several atomic percent Hg at about 700 C; (3) four intermetallic compounds-Gd11Hg45, GdHg3, GdHg2, and GdHg, with narrow homogeneity ranges-of which the first two form peritectically and the others probably melt congruently; and (4) the (Hg) phase, with a low solid solubility of Gd. 66Kir: H.R. Kirchmayr and W. Lugscheider, Z. Metallkd., 57, 725-728 (1966) in German. Submitted to the APD Program. Complete evaluation contains 3 figures, 4 tables, and 18 references.
