Eu-Ni

Eu-Ni (Europium-Nickel) C.H. Tung and P. Nash The assessed Ni-Eu phase diagram is based on the work of [67Sav], who established the existence of Ni17Eu2 and Ni5Eu. The proposed peritectic formation of Ni17Eu2 in the assessed phase diagram was not documented by [ 67Sav]. On the basis that the alloy containing about 19 at.% Eu melted at 1440 с 10 C, [67Sav] assumed that Ni5Eu melts congruently near this temperature. [ 65Che] used electrolytic Ni (99.9 at.% pure) and Eu containing less than 0.1 at.% Sm and Gd, 0.075 at.% Ca, 0.01 at.% Fe, 0.005 at.% Cu, and 0.04 at.% Ta and indicated a eutectic reaction L = (Ni) + Ni17Eu2 at 1190 с 10 C, compared with 1200 с 10 C [67Sav]. The eutectic composition was estimated to be about 5 to 6 at.% Eu. [65Che] determined the highest Ni compound in this system to be Ni17Eu2. The liquidus between 0 and 4 at.% Eu is established and is thus shown with a solid line; the remainder is not determined. Alloys with 0.3 at.% Eu or more quenched from 1100 C had a (Ni) lattice parameter of 0.35216 nm, compared with the value 0.35211 for pure Ni [67Sav], indicating an expansion of 0.014%. The maximum solubility of Eu in (Ni), therefore, is concluded to be less than 0.3 at.% Eu at 1100 C, decreasing to essentially zero at room temperature. [65Che] studied the magnetic properties of some Ni-Eu alloys between 300 and 1000 C. The reciprocal value of the specific susceptibility 1/c is linear in a wide temperature range. Only at very high temperatures does it start to level off, and the same is found for pure Ni. 65Che: V.I. Chechernikov, N.M. Speranskiy, V.F. Terekhova, and R.S. Rozhkova, Fiz. Met.
