Cu-Os

Cu-Os (Copper-Osmium) P.R. Subramanian and D.E. Laughlin Experimental data on the Cu-Os system are very limited. Electrical resistivity measurements of Cu-rich alloys showed negligible solid solubility of Os in (Cu) at 900 C [32Lin]. There are no other reports on the Cu-Os system. The melting points of Cu and Os are 1084.87 C and 3033 C, respectively [Melt]. The equilibrium phases of the assessed phase diagram are: (1) the liquid, L; ( 2) the fcc terminal solid solution, (Cu), with very limited solid solubility of Os; and (3) the cph terminal solid solution, (Os), with very limited solid solubility of Cu. The assessed phase diagram is schematic, because it is based on a simple thermodynamic model [83Nie]. The diagram is characterized by an S- shaped liquidus with a near-horizontal region at ~2400 C, implying the existence of a metastable liquid-liquid miscibility gap at lower temperatures. 32Lin: J.O.
