Co-Li

Co-Li (Cobalt-Lithium) J. Sangster and A.D. Pelton The reaction between liquid Li and solid Co was studied by [65Bon], who heated Li in Co crucibles at 510 and 730 C for 11 to 80 min. After heating, the crucibles were quenched, sectioned, and examined micrographically, radiographically, and spectrographically. [65Bon] also measured the lattice parameter of the fcc (aCo) and cph (eCo) samples. It can be concluded from the work of [65Bon] that in the range 500 to 700 C, the order of magnitude of the solubility of Li in (aCo) is 0.1 at.%. The solubility in (eCo) cannot be deduced. The solubility of Co in liquid Li has not been reported. The effect of added Li on the eCo = aCo transformation in the range 0 to 37 at. % Li was determined by [37Has] from thermal expansion and magnetic measurements. The partial phase diagram given in [37Has] suggests a solid solubility of Li in (Co) of about 30 at.% Li at the transformation temperature, which is in direct contrast to work of [65Bon], who reported less than 0.4 at. % Li. Consequently, the results and/or their interpretation are suspect. [ 65Bon] suggested the existence of a hexagonal Hume-Rothery "7/4" phase with the stoichiometry Co3Li, but there has been no further attempt to confirm this.
