Ce-Gd (Cerium-Gadolinium) K.A. Gschneidner, Jr. and F.W. Calderwood The assessed phase diagram for the Ce-Gd system contains some features of the diagram of [63Bur], with revisions that are based on the work of [66Lun]. The melting points and transformation temperatures of the pure metals have been adjusted to the accepted values of [Gschneidner]. [63Bur] indicated that an intermediate Sm-type d phase is formed by a peritectoid reaction. However, [66Lun] suggested that the transformation to the Sm-type structure is martensitic in nature. [67Har] investigated the effects of filing on the X-ray diffraction patterns of some Ce-Gd alloys at room temperature and at -196 C. Their study suggested that the Sm-type and dcph structures can be stabilized at significantly lower Ce content by cold working. [66Jay] examined several binary alloys of a light RE metal with a heavy RE metal and found that a Ce-70 at.% Gd specimen transformed from its normal Sm- type structure to the dcph structure during a 5-h treatment at 40 kbar and 450 C. [76Wan] investigated the phase stability of intra-RE alloys by splat cooling cph solid solutions that contained elements with both cph and bcc allotropic forms, including alloys in the Ce-Gd system. Through splat cooling, the cph phase field was extended into the composition range that under equilibrium conditions should have the Sm-type structure.
