Cd-Sm

Cd-Sm (Cadmium-Samarium) K.A. Gschneidner, Jr. and F.W. Calderwood The Sm-Cd system is characterized by the existence of six compounds: (1) the Cd-rich compound, SmCd11, which decomposes peritectically at 430 C (the liquidus at the decomposition temperature contains 98.8 at.% Cd); (2) the Cd- rich compound, SmCd6, which decomposes peritectically at 728 C to the melt; ( 3) Sm13Cd58, which decomposes peritectically and melts at 742 C; (4) Sm11Cd45, which melts congruently at 798 C; (5) SmCd2, which melts congruently at 910 C; and (6) SmCd, which melts congruently at 1023 C. The assessed phase diagram is based on the experimental data of [74Bru], with review of the data of [66Joh]. A eutectic occurs between SmCd and SmCd2 at 865 C, and between SmCd2 and Sm11Cd45 at 780 C. The eutectic compositions are estimated to be ~62 and ~75 at.% Cd, respectively. A eutectic between (Sm) and SmCd at 554 C was reported by [65Vel], but due to the wide scatter in experimental data, this eutectic horizontal and the associated liquidus lines are shown by dashed lines in the assessed diagram. 65Vel: E.
