Cd-Nd

Cd-Nd (Cadmium-Neodymium) K.A. Gschneidner, Jr. and F.W. Calderwood The Nd-Cd system is characterized by the existence of seven intermetallic compounds. A eutectic between Nd and NdCd occurs at ~650 C. The assessed phase diagram is based on a partial phase diagram showing the peritectic decomposition of NdCd11 and the liquidus at high Cd concentration ( 93 to 100 at.% Cd) reported by [66Joh]. The liquidus was determined by the chemical analysis of the filtered liquid phase after equilibration. Differential thermal analysis was used to determine the peritectic decomposition temperature of NdCd11. Extrapolation of solubility data was used to estimate the liquidus compositions between the last solubility point and the peritectic temperature. Liquidus compositions at temperatures above the peritectic decomposition of NdCd11 were also estimated. The peritectic decomposition of NdCd11 occurs at 530 C, where 2.6 at.% Nd is soluble in Cd. The solid phase that is in equilibrium with the melt above 530 C is NdCd6. 66Joh: I. Johnson, K.E. Anderson, and R.A. Blomquist, ASM Trans. Q., 59, 3520 ( 1966). Published in Bull.
