Cd-Li

Cd-Li (Cadmium-Lithium) A.D. Pelton The assessed phase diagram for the Cd-Li system is based primarily on the work of [32Gru], which is in fair agreement with the earlier work of [10Mas]. Recent work of [82Van] shows reasonable agreement for the liquidus on the Cd- rich side. However, the maximum in the liquidus/solidus was found to occur at 40 at.% Li, rather than 50 at.% Li. The liquidus and solidus on the Li-rich side differ by up to 50 C with the earlier work. An additional "b" phase between (Cd) and Cd3Li was proposed by [32Gru], with a two-phase region appearing approximately as shown by the dashed lines in the assessed phase diagram and with a peritectic at 328 C and a eutectoid involving (Cd), b, and Cd3Li at 80 C. However, [68Far] found that the (Cd) phase extends at least to 22 at.% Li at 150 C. It seems, therefore, most likely that the "b" phase does not exist. The stoichiometry Cd3Li is based on the observation of the peak in the two- phase region at 370 C and 25 at.% Li, as well as on a peak in the electrical resistivity at this composition [32Gru]. The proposed boundaries of the two- phase (Cd) + Cd3Li region, however, are not consistent with the results of [ 68Far], which show single-phase (Cd) extending to at least 22 at.% Li at 150 C. CdLi is well established as having the NaTl-type (B32) structure at room temperature and 50 at.% Li. CdLi3 has an fcc structure. 10Mas: G. Masing and G. Tammann, Z. Anorg. Allg.
