Cd-Gd

Cd-Gd (Cadmium-Gadolinium) K.A. Gschneidner, Jr. and F.W. Calderwood The Gd-Cd system is characterized by six intermediate phases: GdCd, GdCd2, GdCd3, Gd11Cd45, Gd13Cd58, and GdCd6. The only congruently melting intermediate compound in the system is GdCd, which melts at 1170 C. GdCd forms a eutectic with (bGd) at 937 C and ~27 at.% Gd. GdCd2 exists in two polymorphic forms, changing at 995 C from the low-temperature hexagonal form to an undetermined high-temperature form. bGdCd2 decomposes on heating above 1010 C to the melt and GdCd. On heating to 815 C, GdCd3 decomposes to the melt and aGdCd2. Gd11Cd45 decomposes peritectically at 806 C, forming GdCd3 and the melt. Gd13Cd58 decomposes peritectically at 803 C to the melt and Gd11Cd45. The Cd- rich compound, GdCd6, decomposes peritectically at 716 C to the melt and Gd13Cd58. The assessed phase diagram is based primarily on the work of [71Bru]. Addition of Gd to Cd lowers the melting temperature from 321 C at 0 at.% Gd to 316 C at ~2.5 at.% Gd. No detectable range of solid solubility was observed at room temperature for any of the intermediate phases. The solubility of Cd in bGd at 937 C, the eutectic temperature, was estimated as 22 at.% Cd. Addition of Cd to Gd resulted in a eutectoid-type lowering of the a = b transformation temperature of Gd. The eutectoid was reported at 725 C and ~16 at.% Cd. No solid solubility of Gd in (Cd) was observed. 71Bru: G. Bruzzone, M.L. Fornasini, and F. Merlo, J. Less-Common Met., 25, 295 (1971).
