C-Ni

C-Ni (Carbon-Nickel) M.F. Singleton and P. Nash The Ni-C system consists of a simple eutectic, with limited terminal solid solubility of C in fcc (Ni) and very limited terminal solid solubility of Ni in (C, graphite). The assessed phase diagram is based primarily on the work of [67Rut], [69Luc], and [73Nat]. No data are available for the Ni-rich solidus. The solidus has been constructed from the melting point of pure fcc Ni (1455 C) to the maximum solid solubility of C (graphite) in (Ni) (2.7 at.% C) [Hansen]. The Ni-rich liquidus data of [69Luc] have been used to construct the corresponding boundary. On the C-rich side of the system, liquidus data are not available, so the phase boundary has been drawn essentially in agreement with that of [ 81Ers]. Although there are no stable carbides in the Ni-C (graphite) system, a metastable carbide, Ni3C, can be produced. On splat quenching (~106 C/s) of a molten Ni-C alloy, a highly supersaturated fcc phase was produced, along with Ni3C. 67Rut: C. Ruth and M. Turpin, C.R. Acad. Sci.
