Bi-Na

Bi-Na (Bismuth-Sodium) J. Sangster and A.D. Pelton The assessed phase diagram for the Bi-Na system is based primarily on [70Joh], with review of the data of [1892Hey], [00Kur], [06Mat], [67Fis], [67Fos], [ 69Geh], [70Wal], and [85Ega]. The solubility of Na in solid (Bi) has not been studied. Under the assumptions of no solid solubility and of an ideal activity of Bi in the liquid, a eutectic composition of 25 at.% Na is calculated thermodynamically. Because the activity coefficient of Bi in the liquid is expected to be slightly less than unity, the eutectic composition would be expected at a slightly lower Na content in accord with the assessed diagram. From this it can be concluded that the solubility of Na in (Bi) cannot be more than a few percent. The atomic sizes of Na and Bi are nearly identical, which would suggest that solid solubility is possible. On the other hand, the large difference in electronegativity of Na and Bi would tend to mitigate against solid solubility. Experimental study of the solubility of Na in (Bi) is needed. 1892Hey: C.T.
