Bi-Ge

Bi-Ge (Bismuth-Germanium) R.W. Olesinski and G.J. Abbaschian The Ge-Bi system is characterized by a eutectic reaction very close to the melting point of Bi (271.442 C). The mutual solubilities of Ge and Bi in the solid state are negligible. The assessed phase diagram is based primarily on the work of [40Rut], [40Sto], [60Thu], and [61Sch] and was obtained by thermodynamic modeling. The calculations were based on the assumption that the enthalpy and entropy of mixing functions are temperature independent and that the mutual solid solubilities of Ge and Bi are nil. The (Ge) solidus above the eutectic temperature is probably retrograde, with the maximum solubility of about 8 x 10-5 at.% Bi around 865 C [62Tru]. Amorphous Ge-Bi films containing up to 25 at.% Bi have been evaporated onto glass substrates cooled by liquid nitrogen or water, using high-purity Ge and 6 N pure Bi. 40Rut: K. Ruttewit and G.
