Be-Ge

Be-Ge (Beryllium-Germanium) H. Okamoto and L.E. Tanner The assessed phase diagram for the Be-Ge system is adopted from [81Mol]. A wide range of liquid immiscibility exists. The melting point of bBe and the bBe = aBe allotropic transformation temperature are 1289 с 5 and 1270 с 6 C, respectively [Melt]. The melting point of Ge is 938.3 C [Melt]. [46Ray] predicted the existence of an intermetallic compound by considering the electrochemical properties of Be and Ge. [50Kau] reported that a compound phase was present in a 1.4 at.% Ge alloy slowly cooled from the melt. However, examinations by [60Yan] on a 10 at.% Ge cast alloy indicated the presence of only the terminal phases. [60Yan] concluded that intermetallic compounds, if formed, were stable only at high temperatures. [59Las] estimated the maximum solubility of Be in (Ge) to be 1019 atoms/cm3 (i. e., 0.023 at.% Be by assuming that the density of Ge is 5.3267 g/cm3). [67She] reported that the solubility was at least 109 atoms/cm3, because they could prepare this alloy composition by using zone-refining techniques. The equilibrium solubility of Be in (Ge) as a function of temperature is still unknown. 46Ray: G.V. Raynor, J. Roy. Aeronaut. Soc., 50, 410 (1946). 50Kau: A.R. Kaufmann, P. Gordon, and D.W.
