B-Ni

B-Ni (Boron-Nickel) P.K. Liao and K.E. Spear The Ni-B system consists of five intermetallic compounds (Ni3B, Ni2B, orthorhombic and monoclinic Ni4B3, and NiB) and the terminal solid solutions, fcc (Ni) and rhombohedral (bB). The assessed phase diagram is based primarily on the work of [65Sch]. Liquidus temperatures for compositions greater than about 60 at.% B are uncertain to the extent of 30 to 100 C. The mutual solid solubilities of the terminal elements are small, and the homogeneity ranges of the intermetallic compounds are very narrow. [65Sch] reported a value of 0.3 at.% for the maximum solubility of B in (Ni) at the eutectic temperature of 1093 C. The melting temperatures of alloys with compositions corresponding to orthorhombic Ni4B3 and monoclinic Ni4B3 are 1025 and 1031 C, respectively, and differ only slightly from the eutectic temperatures of these compounds with the adjoining compounds. The compound NiB forms from the liquid and B by a peritectic reaction at 1035 C. Furthermore, a metastable eutectic Ni + Ni2B at 986 C was indicated by [65Sch]. 65Sch: J.D. Schobel and H.H.
