Au-Te

Au-Te (Gold-Tellurium) H. Okamoto and T.B. Massalski The equilibrium phases of the Au-Te system are (1) the liquid, L; (2) the fcc terminal solid solution, (Au), having less than 0.15 at.% solid solubility of Te in (Au); (3) the hexagonal solid solution, (Te), with no reported solubility of Au in (Te); and (4) the intermetallic compound AuTe2 (calaverite) , with a congruent melting point at 464 C and a solid solubility range of less than 0.04 at.%. The assessed phase diagram is essentially unchanged from [ Hansen] and is based primarily on the work of [07Ros], [10Pel], and [77Ber]. The compound Au2Te occurs in nature as the mineral petzite, but has not been reported in synthesized form. The triclinic Au2Te3 compound found in natural minerals may be stable only with additional impurities (~6 at.% Bi, Pb, Sb, etc., total). Attempts to synthesize Au2Te3 have been unsuccessful. The calculated phase diagram based on the thermodynamic model of [77Ber] is in qualitative agreement with the assessed phase diagram. 07Ros: T.K. Rose, Trans. Inst. Min.
