Au-Lu

Au-Lu (Gold-Lutetium) K.A. Gschneidner, Jr., F.W. Calderwood, H. Okamoto, and T.B. Massalski Five intermetallic compounds have been reported in the Lu-Au system, but essentially no data are available on the melting temperatures, type of formation, or the eutectics that may exist in this system. [71Mcm] reported that the Lu-rich phase, Lu2Au, crystallizes in the orthorhombic Co2Si-type structure. [60Dwi] and [71Mcm] reported that LuAu crystallizes with the cubic CsCl-type structure. Using thermal analyses, [ 71Mcm] found the melting point of LuAu to be 1780 с 10 C. Unlike several of the other rare earth-gold compounds, LuAu exists in only one form. [71Mcm] also reported that LuAu2 crystallizes in the tetragonal MoSi2-type form. LuAu3 crystallizes in the orthorhombic Cu3Ti-type structure and LuAu4 forms in the tetragonal MoNi4-type structure. No melting data are available for any compounds other than LuAu. Using the X-ray parametric method, [65Rid] found 7.7 at.% Lu to be soluble in ( Au) at the eutectic temperature of 890 C. The composition of this eutectic between (Au) and LuAu4 was not determined. 60Dwi: W.E. Dwight, ANL-6330, Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, IL (1960). 65Rid: P.E. Rider, K.A. Gschneidner, Jr., and O.D. McMasters, Trans. AIME, 233, 1488 (1965). 71Mcm: O.D. McMasters, K.A. Gschneidner, Jr., G. Bruzzone, and A. Palenzona, J. Less-Common Met., 25, 135 (1971). Published in Phase Diagrams of Binary Gold Alloys, 1987. Complete evaluation contains 3 figures, 2 tables, and 11 references. 1
