Al-Yb

Al-Yb (Aluminum-Ytterbium) K.A. Gschneidner, Jr. and F.W. Calderwood The assessed phase diagram for the Al-Yb system is based primarily on the work of [71Kul] and [72Pal], with some adjustments in the temperatures of the isotherms. The system is characterized by two intermetallic compounds, Al3Yb and Al2Yb, and two eutectics, one at 4 at.% Yb and 625 C between Al and Al3Yb and the other between Al2Yb and Yb at 675 C and 77.5 at.% Yb. The compound Al3Yb decomposes peritectically at 980 C to the melt and Al2Yb. The latter compound melts congruently at 1360 C [72Pal]. There is no significant solubility of Yb in (Al), but the addition of Al to pure Yb lowers the b = g transformation temperature of Yb to 770 C, and a metatectic reaction ((gYb) = (bYb) + L) occurs at 97.5 at.% Yb. Al2Yb exists over a solid solution region estimated to be less than 1 at.% Al and has a cubic Cu2Mg-type structure. 71Kul: V.K. Kulifeev, G.P. Stanolevich, and V.G. Kuzlov, Ivz. V.U.Z. Tsvetn.
