Al-Nd

Al-Nd (Aluminum-Neodymium) K.A. Gschneidner, Jr. and F.W. Calderwood The assessed phase diagram for the Al-Nd phase diagram is based primarily on the work of [65Bus]. The system is characterized by six intermetallic compounds. Al11Nd3, the Al-rich compound, forms peritectically at 1235 C from the melt and Al2Nd and exists in two allotropic forms with a transition at 950 C. The aAl11Nd3 phase has orthorhombic structure, and the bAl11Nd3 phase has tetragonal structure of the Al-deficient BaAl4-type. Al3Nd is formed by a peritectoidal reaction between bAl11Nd3 and Al2Nd at 1205 C and has the hexagonal Ni3Sn-type structure. Al2Nd is the only congruently melting intermetallic compound in this system, with a melting point of 1460 C. Al2Nd has the cubic Cu2Mg-type structure. AlNd has an orthorhombic AlEr-type structure and is formed peritectically at 940 C from the melt and Al2Nd. Likewise, orthorhombic AlNd2 forms at 795 C by a peritectic reaction between the melt and AlNd. AlNd3 is formed by a peritectic reaction at 675 C between the melt and AlNd2. AlNd3 has a hexagonal Ni3Sn-type structure and no polymorphic transformation as has been observed for AlCe3 and AlPr3. Two eutectics occur in this system: one between Al and aAl11Nd3 at 640 C and about 8 at.% Nd and one between AlNd3 and aNd at 635 C and about 85 at.% Nd. Al is only slightly soluble in Nd. A maximum solubility of 0.008 at.% Nd was reported in Al at the eutectic temperature [69Dri]. 65Bus: K.H.J. Buschow, J. Less-Common Met., 9, 452 (1965). 69Dri: M.E. Drits, E.S. Kadaner, and N.D.
