Al-Gd

Al-Gd (Aluminum-Gadolinium) K.A. Gschneidner, Jr. and F.W. Calderwood The assessed phase diagram for the Al-Gd system is based primarily on the work of [65Bus]. There are five compounds in the system: AlGd2, Al2Gd3, AlGd, Al2Gd, and Al3Gd. AlGd2 (orthorhombic Co2Si type) decomposes peritectically at 950 C to the melt and Al2Gd3 (tetragonal Al2Zr3 type). The latter decomposes by a peritectic reaction at 980 C to the melt and AlGd (orthorhombic AlEr type). AlGd remains stable up to 1075 C and then decomposes peritectically to the melt and Al2Gd (cubic Cu2Mg type). Al2Gd is the only compound in this system to have a congruent melting point (1525 C). Al3Gd (hexagonal Ni3Sn type) decomposes by a peritectic reaction at 1125 C to the melt and Al2Gd. The diagram exhibits a eutectic between (Al) and Al3Gd at 650 C and ~5 at.% Gd, and a eutectic occurs between (Gd) and AlGd2 at 875 C and ~77 at.% Gd. Although the solubility of Al in the rare earth metals is generally quite small, it appears to increase with decreasing rare earth radius [67Bus]. 65Bus: K.H.J. Buschow, J.
