Al-Dy

Al-Dy (Aluminum-Dysprosium) Editor The assessed phase diagram for the Al-rich portion of the Al-Dy system is based primarily on the work of [67Cas]. The Dy-rich portion of the Al-Dy diagram is redrawn from [Moffatt], who assumed that the L = AlDy3 + (Dy) eutectic point reported by [64Cop] is actually the L = AlDy2 + (Dy) eutectic point, because AlDy3 is a carbon-stabilized compound [67Bus]. The Al-rich compound, Al3Dy, has the hexagonal Ni3Sn-type structure below about 1005 C, where it transforms to rhombohedral Al3Ho-type structure. The b form deviates in stoichiometry toward higher Dy content and decomposes peritectically to Al2Dy and the melt at 1090 C. The latter phase, which has the cubic Cu2Mg- type structure, melts congruently at 1500 C. A eutectic between Al and Al3Dy occurs at 636 C, with a composition of about 2.5 at.% Dy. Other compounds that have been reported are AlDy2 (orthorhombic Co2Si type), Al2Dy3 ( tetragonal Al2Zr3 type), and AlDy (orthorhombic AlEr type). No melting data are available for these forms.-H.O. 64Cop: M. Copeland and H. Kato, Physics and Material Problems of Reactor Control Rods, Int. At.
