Ag-Mn

Ag-Mn (Silver-Manganese) I. Karakaya and W.T. Thompson Several contradictory phase diagrams have been published for the Ag-Mn system [ 08Hin], [Hansen], [49Rau], [Metals], and [71Kre]. There is general agreement that the liquid phase exhibits a large miscibility gap skewed to the Mn side of the system. Substantial Mn solubility in solid Ag has generally been reported. There is also agreement that the four allotropic modifications of Mn show relatively small Ag solubilities. The phase boundaries extending from the melting point of Ag are in considerable doubt, as well as the temperature and phases in equilibrium at a likely peritectic in the vicinity of 1000 C. The assessed phase diagram has been obtained by thermodynamic modeling of original experimental work [46Rau, 59Hel, 81Pot]. Metastable Ag-rich alloys supersaturated with Mn as a result of very rapid solidification (105 to 106 C/s) have been produced. Lattice parameter measurements indicate supersaturation up to 48 at.% Mn [83Nin]. 08Hin: G. Hindrichs, Z. Anorg. Chem., 59, 437-441 (1908) in German. 46Rau: E. Raub and A. Engel, Z.
